AT&T has officially announced plans to begin its LTE rollout in Dallas, Houston, Chicago, Atlanta and San Antonio starting sometime "this summer."

AT&T stated at the beginning of this year that it planned to deliver 4G LTE in the second half of 2011. It looks like that promise will be kept.

AT&T also noted that it plans to add 10 more markets in the second half and cover over 70 million Americans with 4G by the end of the year.

Unfortunately, specifics on those locations have not been announced thus far. AT&T is also keeping tight-lipped on whatever LTE-compatible hardware it has in store, saying only the following:

"We also have plans to add 20 4G devices to our robust device portfolio this year, with some of those being LTE capable."

Presumably, the vast majority of these devices will be HSPA+ ready, but we can only assume that the "some" part of this equation might include a smartphone or two and not just a bunch of laptop data sticks.
