Is Amazon prepping a "family" of Android devices?
Published on May 13, 2011
Amazon has remained tight-lipped about its hardware plans for Android, but a new rumor suggests that the company is working on "an entire family" of devices.
Obviously, that would mean Amazon is thinking far beyond just Anroid-powered tablets.
The rumor comes via Android and Me, who claim that the information came from an "industry insider with direct knowledge of the project".
The tipster didn't elaborate on what this family of devices would entail specifically, but Android and Me speculates that the lineup will include several tablet sizes, at least one smartphone and, possibly, a set-top box running Google TV.
Given the recent launch of the Amazon Appstore, the Amazon Cloud Player/Cloud Drive streaming music service, the existing Amazon video rental service and the 6 and 9.7-inch Kindle sizes, it seems plausable that Amazon is prepping something big in the hardware arena.
Again, Amazon is keeping tight-lipped on its plans, but CEO Jeff Bezos recently replied "stay tuned" when Consumer Reports asked a question about the Amazon tablet.
We definitely will.
