Google invites the press to Mountain View for a special mobile announcement

Published on Aug 12, 2010

As we reported earlier this week, Google held a small press gathering at its headquarters in Mountain View, California today to talk about some "cool new mobile features".

First on Google's agenda today was the addition of Voice Actions for Android. Its name couldn't be any more descriptive of what it does. With a simple voice command, you can do a range of things from searching for directions, to searching for music online and even complex queries like planning a vacation.

The full list of Voice Actions directly from the Googe Mobile Blog:

  • send text to [contact] [message]
  • listen to [artist/song/album]
  • call [business]
  • call [contact]
  • send email to [contact] [message]
  • go to [website]
  • note to self [note]
  • navigate to [location/business name]
  • directions to [location/business name]
  • map of [location]

The other "big announcement" made to today was something that not only was announced all the way back at Google I/O, but that we've been using for quite some time now - Chrome to Phone.

Don't get us wrong, Chrome to Phone is very cool. It's a Chrome (and also Firefox) extension that essentially forms a direct communication with your phone.

Reading an article on your computer, but have to get going? No problem. Simply click the phone icon in your browser and the link is immediately sent to your phone.

You can also send things like YouTube videos, navigation destinations and more, and the appropriate apps are automatically launched on your Android-powered device.

Both of the features announced today are exclusively available to Android devices running Froyo, and are available immediately in the Android Market.
