A guess at what the often-rumored Sony Ericsson PSP phone might look like

If there is one major advantage the iPhone has over Android, it's gaming. But Sony Ericsson might be on the verge of changing that.

According to Engadget sources, Sony Ericsson is in the late stages of a plan to release a PSP Go-like smartphone alongside a brand new Android gaming ecosystem.

As far as hardware is concerned, the phone is said to be a "cross between the Samsung Captivate and the PSP Go" - a landscape slider with game controls in place of the QWERTY keyboard. These controls include a D-Pad, standard PSP buttons and a "long touchpad" for analog controls.

The screen will be 3.7 to 4.1 inches with WVGA or better resolution, and it will include a 5-megapixel camera and a 1GHz Snapdragon processor.

The PSP phone will apparently be among the first to run Android 3.0, and there will be a separate section in the Android market specifically for the games. Chances are, these games will only work with the PSP phone at first, but could be opened to other Android phones that meet the hardware requirements.

The games themselves are said to be in the realm of PSX and PSP games graphics-wise.

If these rumors are true we could see a phone arrive as early as October. That's good news for gaming enthusiasts, but we sincerely hope casual gamers can get in on the action without having to buy a dedicated gaming phone or wait for manufacturers to alter button layouts.
