Gartner says sales boomed, while the need for low prices cut margins last quarter
Mobile device sales on the rise once again

Gartner Research has released some interesting figures on Q2 2010's mobile phone sales around the globe.
Year-over-year, mobile device sales grew 13.8 percent, thanks to the sale of 325.6 million devices shipped in just three short months.
We knew that Android had officially overcome RIM as the most popular OS in the country, while RIM slipped a bit.
Gartner also reports that average selling prices were lower than expected, causing shrinking profit margins, due to several possible factors, including increased competition. There's the shocker of the year.
If we had to describe this year, or more specifically, this summer's mobile landscape in one word, it would be -- competition. Never before have there been even close to this many amazing devices all launching in such short timeframes. What that ultimately boils down to is a whole lot of great options for consumers, but a need for lower price points and ultimately lower profits for manufacturers and carriers.
