Radio Shack said to be ditching Palm Pre and Pixi

The embattled smartphone manufacturer Palm has been dealt another blow as Radio Shack appears to be ditching Sprint's webOS phones

Palm Pre and Pixi

According to reports, Radio Shack is bailing on Palm devices

UPDATE: Sprint spokesman Scott Sloat has confirmed to Barron's in an email that the Palm Pre and Pixi are being phased out at Radio Shack:

This is in line with Radio Shack’s normal product planning process - there is a designated amount of space in stores for handsets and they work to keep the line up of devices as current as possible. The plan is for the Pre to be replaced by a BlackBerry device and the Pixi for a message-centric device. At this point, that is as detailed as I can be.

Earlier: Palm is a sinking ship, and Radio Shack is ready to jump overboard. Digital Daily reports that the retailer has removed all Sprint-based Palm smartphones from both its online store and from many of its brick-and-mortar locations.

This probably won't be the last retailer to turn its back on Palm as the company slides further into the abyss -- until it can piece an acquisition together, at least.

Verizon and Amazon have both drastically cut prices on the Pre Plus and Pixi Plus and thrown in huge incentives like free access to the Mobile Hotspot service that transforms your phone into a 3G hotspot for up to five devices.

AT&T is also expected to begin carrying webOS devices in the coming months -- so at least not everyone is abandoning Palm. That said, the writing is definitely on the wall.
