Microsoft Windows Phone 7 Series development documents leak

Sean Fallon

Purported documents from Microsoft shed light on its Windows Phone 7 Series Application Development policy

Next month's Mix 2010 developer conference figures to be the venue where we hear Microsoft's official plan for developers, but documents leaked on the XDA-Developer's forum may provide an early look at what to expect, WMPoweruser.com reports.

Scanning through the documents we noticed a few important points:

  • The OS is capable of multitasking as expected, but that is no guarantee Microsoft will actually allow developers to take advantage of it. Most developers will be limited to managed code.
  • OEMs and mobile operators are restricted from native apps and will be limited to managed APIs that Microsoft will audit.
  • The OS is built around Silverlight and XNA (much like the Zune HD) and the .NET Compact framework.
  • Dev tools include Microsoft's Visual Studio 2010, Expression Blend and a Windows Phone emulator.

You don't need to be a developer to see how managed apps and restrictions on the API would raise some red flags -- although Apple developers have had to deal with similar barriers for years.
