Apple may support 802.11ac 5G Gigabit Wi-Fi on the iPhone 5 and iPad 3

A new report suggests that Apple is working to bring 802.11ac Wi-Fi spec to upcoming devices - maybe even the iPhone 5 and iPad 3. 

To put things in perspective, 802.11ac can deliver 2-4 times the frequency bandwidth (80 to 160MHz) and more efficient data transfers than the current 802.11n spec. It can also support up to eight antennas compared to four on 802.11n for better range and reliablility. 

The information comes via AppleInsider which notes Apple plans to 'rapidly deploy support' of the new Wi-Fi standard into AirPort base stations, Time Capsules, Apple TV, notebooks and 'potentially its mobile devices'. 

Surely Apple will support the new spec on mobile devices down the line, but here's hoping that it will make an appearance early on the iPhone 5 and/or iPad 3. 

Keep in mind that the official standard hasn't been finalized just yet, but companies like Apple component maker Broadcomm have already announced chipsets that can support 802.11ac.
