Spotify's CEO/Founder Daniel Ek announcing the new Spotify Platform in New York City
Published on Nov 30, 2011
Spotify came all the way to New York City today to make a big announcement.
Not the fact that is has snared upwards of 2.5 million American using since bringing the service to the United States. And not the fact that there are now more than 10 million users worldwide.
CEO and founder Daniel Ek took the stage in Greenwich Village to announce something they're calling Spotify Platform and Spotify apps – a series of applets within Spotify's computer software which give third party developers the opportunity to build innovative, engaging music-based apps.
The first generation of Spotify Apps features 16 partner apps, with 12 available from launch today Those partner/developers include Billboard, Fuse, The Guardian, Last.fm, Moodagent, Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, Songkick, Soundrop, TuneWiki and We Are Hunted, with Top10 and ShareMyPlaylists apps coming soon.
Think in terms of new ways to share your playlists as well as tapping-in to your friends lists as well as list from others. For instance, Rolling Stone showed how their new app allows you to see their editors' lists of favorites – like “The Rolling Stone List of 100 Best Guitarists” - where you can read the list then click – and instantly hear any song on that list.
According to Ek:
"Once you take a look, you’ll see why we believe this is truly the beginning of something game-changing for digital music. We think this will lead to integrations that keep Spotify beautiful and simple, but layer in great musical experiences designed to be social and fun. It’s what our users have been asking us for."
For now, the new Spotify Platformands Apps will appear only on Spotify computer applications beginning in December. Ek said that as soon as it catches on he expects the Platform to be added to Spotify software for mobile devices too.
