In an interview with Forbes following his company's earnings report, Sprint CEO Dan Hesse said that the Apple iPhone will actually help the carrier to continue offering unlimited data plans for a longer period of time than it otherwise would have.

In the the interview Hesse says the iPhone uses significantly less mobile data, and hits the network less often, than Android devices. Apple's strict guidelines about app network efficiency mean the iPhone, on average, is less data-hungry than its competitors. He also notes it is better at finding Wifi, than Android devices are.

While Hesse didn't provide any hard data to back up his statements, the fact that Apple has such network regulations in the first place, and that Android doesn't, makes it more than likely.

Hesse went on to say that Sprint would not release any figures regarding iPhone 4 and 4S sales until Apple's phone had been available on Sprint for a full quarter. Some analysts predicted that the iPhone could quickly make up over half of the carrier's smartphone sales, but the CEO warned Wall Street not to set any ridiculously high expectations.

All in all, Sprint expects the availability of Apple's iPhone 4 and 4S to increase revenue by $7 to $8 billion over a four year period.
