Samsung's new ChatOn messaging service brings texting, group chat and video sharing to Bada, Android, iOS and BlackBerry

Samsung's upcoming ChatOn cross platform messaging service

Published on Aug 29, 2011

Samsung has unveiled a new messaging service called ChatOn that will allow users to interact in multiple ways across multiple platforms in 120 countries and 62 languages.

Think of it like a supercharged verson of BlackBerry Messenger, WhatsApp Messenger and other similar services.

ChatOn will allow userst to text, group chat, share videos, photos, animated messages, contacts, calendars and more to users across Samsung's Bada OS, iOS, Android and BlackBerry.

There will also be a "trunk" component that serves as a storage area for sharing files, Slashgear reports.

Engadget adds that ChatOn will be compatible with featurephones, smartphones and tablets. A PC version is in the works as well.

There's no word on when the service might become avaialble, but Samsung is expected to officially debut the service at IFA in Berlin this week, so we should know more soon.

At any rate, Samsung's decision to go outside of its own ecosystem and make ChatON avaialble on numerous platforms to such a large segment of the global population should give it an advantage over competitors.
