The LG KU990 Viewty's touchscreen and 3-inch high resolution make it an ideal platform for Google Maps - the world's leading mobile mapping and routefinding application.

Many Viewty owners will be lucky enough to have a working version bundled with their handset - all they need to do is go to their applications folder and launch Google Maps.

Part 1 - Adjust the Applications & Games Settings

1. Unlock the Viewty and click on the shortcut icon with four dots at the bottom left of the screen
2. Click on the Multimedia icon - it looks like a film clapperboard - in the vertical tab bar on the right of the screen
3. Click on Games & Apps
4. In the Games & Apps menu click on Settings
5. In the Settings menu you should see a link on mobile operators' Internet settings. Select your service provider and click on Activate. If your mobile operator isn't listed click on the button at the bottom left of the screen - a rectangle with three horizontal lines - and click Add new
6. In the form, fill in the various fields. Check with your mobile operator if they require a proxy - if it doesn't select TCP without proxy as your connection mode. You will then only need to fill in the Service name and choose the correct Access point

Part 2 - Download Google Maps

1. Unlock the Viewty go to the main menu and launch the Browser
2. Enter the following web address for Google Maps - www.google.co.uk/gmm
3. You will be taken to a page headed with the link 'Download Google Maps on your LG Viewty'. Click on the link to download it. You may see an alert saying that the application is 'untrusted'. Click on Yes to continue the download
4. Select Launch and click on the OK button to launch Google Maps. When prompted to access handset files or the Internet select Allow until exit and click on OK
5. Congratulations! Google Maps should now be running on your LG KU990 Viewty

The LG KU990 Viewty may be limited in terms of installing third-party themes but it's still easy to customize with your own backgrounds - 'or wallpapers' - on many of the key screens.

You can either edit existing images on your Viewty to fit the screen - or you can create them yourself so they fit exactly and then transfer them across to the handset by Bluetooth or the USB cable.

The ideal size and shape for the Viewty is a portrait image, measuring 240 by 400 pixels.

To set the image as a default screen - and one that will appear instead of any theme you have selected - follow these instructions:

2. Click on the Settings icon - it looks like a mechanical cog - in the vertical tab bar on the right of the screen

5. Select the screen you want to customize. The Home screen is the one that appears underneath the main menu grid. Start up/Shut down appear when you turn the Viewty on and off. Outgoing call appears as a smaller image when you make - surprise - an outgoing call
6. If you are choosing a Home screen wallpaper you will be prompted whether you want to use a theme or a picture. Select Use picture and click on the OK button
7. In the My stuff menu choose where you want to source the image from - My images or My memory card - and click on the Select button
8. Click on the image you want as a wallpaper. If the image isn't an exact fit you will be prompted to enlarge or reduce the image to fit the screen. You can also use your finger to move the image around. Click on Set when you are satisfied
9. Voila! You have a new, customized wallpaper on your LG KU990 Viewty

At present, there is no officially sanctioned way to download and install new Flash-based themes onto your LG KU990 Viewty.

That means, in theory, your state-of-the-art mobile phone with its three-inch high resolution touchscreen can only handle three preloaded themes: Black, Silver and Fish.

However, where there's a will there's a way and a small but active community of brave Viewty owners has got together online to find a way to install new, animated Flash-based themes onto their handsets.

Already they have created an iPhone theme, a Simpsons theme and various other themes for the LG KU990 Viewty.

But the downside is that installing a new custom theme is a somewhat convoluted process that involves downloading a piece of software called EFS Media Builder. This software allows you to browse and delete protected directories on your Viewty.

Note: if you use this software you could delete or move crucial files which will render your Viewty inoperable. Follow the instructions we link to carefully and ensure that you have a backup of the phone's firmware

To install a new theme you will need to use EFS Builder to copy it across from your PC and overwriting the Silver theme that is preinstalled on the Viewty. Only one non-standard theme can be installed at any one time.

You can also use a piece of software called Theme Manager to switch between themes and use custom icons and clock widgets.

The LG KU990 Viewty has a broadband-speed 3G/HSDPA connection which means that downloading emails on a regular basis becomes a viable option.

However it pays to check with your mobile operator's service plan to ensure that the cost of checking and downloading emails in this way does not ring up prohibitively expensive data charges. This is particularly important when you travel overseas - in such situations you should make sure that the email application is not set to check for email automatically.

This guide assumes that you have set up your LG KU990 Viewty to connect to the Internet. If you have not, check out this Internet set-up guide first.

1. In the main menu touch the Messaging shortcut - the one with the envelope as an icon - at the bottom of the screen
2. In the Messaging menu scroll down and click on Settings at the bottom of the list
3. In the Settings menu click on Email
4. In the Email menu click on Email accounts
5. In the Email accounts menu click on the icon at the bottom left of the screen and select Add new
6. You will need to enter all your email account information - name, email address, email servers, logon details etc. - into the online form. Remember to select the correct Access point (eg 3 Internet, Orange Internet) to ensure the email client can connect to the Internet when it needs to. Click on Save when you have filled in all the fields
7. Your new account should be listed in the Email accounts menu. Click on the Activate button to get started...

Note: in the Email menu (Step 4) you can click on Retrieve interval and select whether you want to check and download your email at regular intervals. If you want to do this manually make sure the Off option is selected.

The LG LU990 is equipped with the latest 3G/HSDPA connectivity which allows you to browse the web and download email at broadband speeds of up to 3.6 Mbit/second. However to take advantage of this you will need to set up your Viewty so it can access the Internet via your mobile phone operator.

To do this you will first have to set up a new Access Point to log onto your mobile operator's 3G or HSDPA network. You will then select this Access Point from within the settings of the browser or email application. You won't be able to surf the web or use email until you have done both tasks.

Note: SIM cards from some operators will automatically upload your Internet settings onto your phone. Only follow these instructions if you cannot get Internet access.

1. Unlock the Viewty and click on the shortcut icon with four dots at the bottom left of the screen
2. Click on the Settings icon - it looks like a mechanical cog - in the vertical tab bar on the right of the screen
3. In the Settings menu click on the Phone settings icon
4. In the Phone settings menu click on Connectivity
5. In the Connectivity menu click on Access points
6. If your mobile operator's details are not listed click on the Add button
7. Fill in the form as follows:
   • Connection title - enter a name for the connection, eg '3 Internet'
   • Bearer - Select UMTS
   • For the rest of the fields check out our Internet access settings page and enter the correct info for your mobile operator
   • Then click on the Save button

Setting up your web browser

1. Unlock the Viewty and click on the shortcut icon with four dots at the bottom left of the screen
2. Click on the Application settings icon - it looks like a folder with a clock on the front - in the vertical tab bar on the right of the screen
3. Click on Browser
4. Click on Settings
5. Click on Profiles
6. Select the profile for your mobile operator and click on the Activate button. You should now be able to browse the web

Note: some operators may customise the icons with their own brands, eg 'O2 Active' instead of 'Browser'. The instructions should still work.

The 5-megapixel camera on the LG KU990 Viewty is so easy to use that you could well find yourself snap-snapping away at length. It meets all three ease of use requirements in this respect: it is fast to switch on thanks to the side button that gets the software going, easy to flick between video and stills modes thanks to a side-mounted slider switch, and easy to use the various settings and features thanks to touch screen buttons.

When you’ve finished making settings, tapping the screen at any point that doesn’t offer a settings option turns the whole screen into a sideways on landscape viewfinder, with tiny icons reminding you what settings you’ve made – is the macro mode in use, is the flash on, what is the ISO and where are your photos being saved to (handset or memory card) for example.

The Xenon flash makes shooting indoors a bit more pleasant than it is with a normal LED flash, though you won’t always get the quality of images you might be used to if you have a dedicated digital camera.

Outdoors the camera does fairly well, though on duller days we found some photos looked a little washed out.

Once your photos have been taken and are stored in the phone there's a neat viewer which can show a sequence or random shots full screen. You can use the wheel that surrounds the camera lens to zoom. When you are zoomed in a thumbnail is displayed in the bottom right corner of the screen and tapping this moves the zoomed area around – or you can just pull the zoomed picture around using a finger on the screen.

Photo editing software is provided and you can use this to crop images, add text, stamps and handsfree drawing, apply frames and use a range of effects. There is also a studio for creating photo slideshows and joining movies together, complete with playback to music.

Finally, it is a pity there is no lens cover for the camera. With a camera as good as this one is, you might find that over time a scratched lens becomes a real nuisance.

Viewty. Apart from lending itself to rhyming headlines like ‘what a beauty’ we can’t see that the Viewty name has any relevance to anything at all. But then LG has already gone a bit weird with phones called Chocolate, Shine and Prada, the latter the immediate predecessor to this handset, so why should we be surprised that the next step is a phone whose name is an entirely made up word?

Let’s not get too hung up on the name though, as what we have here is a really exceptional mobile phone – with one annoyance we’ll get to later. The Viewty is a quad-band GSM phone with 3G and HSDPA downloads at up to 3.6Mbps where your operator provides that level of connection. It has a front-facing camera for making video calls.

This is one of the new breed of ‘slab’ design mobiles which is almost all touch-screen and no keyboard or number pad. Yes, you could mention the iPhone at this point as a comparator. There are three keys under the screen – Call, End and Cancel, and a few side buttons, but that’s it.

The Viewty isn’t much heavier than your average mobile at 112g, but it is a slightly different format to a standard candybar mobile, being 54.4mm wide. It is 103.5mm tall and 14.8mm thick, and with these dimensions, at first glance you could easily mistake it for a personal video player or, if its back is facing you, for an ultra-thin digital camera.

Actually, in both instances, you’d have a strong case for sticking with that first impression. The screen of the Viewty measures three inches from corner to corner, is 240x400 pixels, and displays 262,000 colours. It can also play DivX video so you could encode downloads into that format and play away.

It records video too, up to a massively impressive 120 frames a second, and while playback on the built-in screen doesn’t really show that frame rate off to its fullest benefit, download the video to your PC and go for slow-mo and you can really start to have some fun.

When it comes to stills the camera shoots at 5 megapixels, making the Viewty a top-end mobile for the digital photography fan.

The camera is activated simply by pressing the same side button you use to take photos – it is on the right-hand edge. There is a slider on the same edge of the mobile and using this lets you switch between shooting modes (stills and video) and image viewing mode.

So, you hit the button, turn the phone into long format with the ‘snap’ button under your right forefinger, fiddle with the slider with your left forefinger depending on whether you want to shoot stills or vids, and you are away. It takes less than 5 seconds to be ready to snap, so taking quick and candid photos is perfectly feasible.

There's a frame around the camera’s lens which has two nobbles on it so you can get hold of it with a finger and twist it. Now, this twisting action has a number of different functions. In camera mode it activates the zoom. In stills viewing mode it lets you zoom into a picture. If you are listening to music or looking at any screen with a menu that extends off the bottom of the viewable area, you can use it for scrolling.

This might have been a clever sounding idea on paper, LG, but having lived with this phone for several weeks we found it irritating. It is simply a pain to have to reach around to the back of the handset with a finger to scroll or zoom, and however we held the mobile to do this, we never quite felt comfortable.

The Viewty's touch screen is put to maximum advantage without, we have to say, going too far down the showy route. We do like the fact that the animated default main screen of the phone has a little goldfish ‘swimming’ around who can be drawn to a certain spot if you touch it with your finger. It has no real functional value, but it is a lark.

More useful is the slight vibration you get from the phone when you tap it to make menu choices and press buttons. One of the problems with touch screens is that you can’t always be sure you have tapped. With the Viewty's vibrations, you get a confirmation every time.

LG has also clearly thought carefully about the way the whole user interface is put together. There's a bank of touch buttons along the bottom of the touch screen covering accessing your contacts, messaging (including mobile email), and calling up a touch-based number pad for voice calling.

Another button in this bank takes you to the phone’s main menu and here options are presented as large icons and ranged into four groups depending on whether they are phone centric, related to media (this is where you access the music player and FM radio, for example), related to personal organisation or phone setup tools.

There’s another clever tweak, and that is that if you drag a finger along a small bar above this bank of touch buttons a three by three grid pops up giving you quick access to nine phone features including the Web browser, alarm, calendar, Bluetooth setup, messaging and memo.

Mentioning memo brings us onto another neat feature – handwriting recognition. When writing a memo or creating an SMS message or email, you can use a fingernail or the included telescopic stylus to write onto the screen and see your words translated into text. The engine is pretty good if you move slowly and write clearly. Alternatively you can use a tappable keyboard in widescreen mode, or a T9 keypad.

Storage runs to 90MB of internal memory. microSD cards are supported for adding more. There are two things that trouble us here. You have to remove the battery cover to get to the card slot, and the maximum sized card you can use is 2GB. The higher capacity SDHC cards are not supported, which is a shame as microSD cards in this format are already available at 8GB capacity and set to go higher still.

Even taking our grumbles into account we can’t help really liking the Viewty. LG should have ditched the camera frame based scroller in favour of an alternative option, but there is lots to like here despite that. Apple schmapple, who needs an iPhone?
