Naturally you have seen the awesome HTC Hero screenshots we have taken for our user guides and you are wondering, "How did they do that?"

The HTC Hero runs on Android 2.1 and as of now, no applications are available that allow for on-device screenshots. This guide will provide you with the software you need and show you how to get stunning screen captures from your device.

Two separate pieces of software are required and must be installed on your PC:

1. The Android software development kit (SDK)
2. The Java SE software development kit (SDK)

Once your downloads are complete a few steps are required to get things ready.

On your computer:

1. Extract the Google Android SDK to a folder on your desktop
2. Install the the Java SE SDK

On the HTC Hero:

1. Press the Home icon, press Menu and then tap Settings
2. Tap on Applications
3. Tap on Development
4. Check the box for USB debugging

Now you are ready to get started.

1. Plug your HTC Hero into your computer via USB and Windows will attempt to install all of the appropriate drivers; one of the drivers will not be found and thus you must proceed to Device Manager in your Control Panel and find the HTC Hero (there will be a yellow icon next to it)
2. Right-click on the HTC Hero entry and select properties; instruct Windows to update/install the driver for this device and when asked, simply browse to the usb_driver folder inside of the Android software development kit folder that you extracted to your desktop earlier -- the device is recognized and the driver is installed
3. Browse to the Android SDK folder that you extracted to your desktop and run the SDK Setup.exe to start the program
4. Once the application has launched you will be presented with a window as shown in figure 2 above
5. Click on the Refresh button so that the application can update its list of operating system SDKs available from Google
6. Check off the section next to the URL that is shown in the application; you are now presented with a list of Android SDKs and Google APIs you wish to install
7. It is recommended that you select select all available packages for maximum compatibility
8. Once the files have been downloaded simply close the application
9. Browse to the Tools folder inside the Android SDK folder you extracted to your desktop
10. Double click on DDMS.BAT to execute the Dalvik Debug Monitor
11. The application will launch with a DOS command window and eventually a Windows based application -- your phone will be listed on the left hand side, and you should click on it to make sure it is selected
12. Click on the Device menu and select Screen Capture or use the CTRL-S key combo
13. The capture now appears on your screen, but there is one final undocumented step
14. We recommend that you click on the Copy button and paste the screenshot into your image editor of choice (Microsoft Paint, Adobe Photoshop, etc) -- the reason for this is that there is a known bug that does not carry over the colors of the actual screenshot inside the capture utility

Voila! You now have a stunning screenshot from the display on your HTC Hero. Repeat steps 12-14 to generate more screenshots.

The HTC Hero with Android 2.1 includes support for Virtual Private Network (VPN) connectivity. Here we show you, step by step, how to setup a VPN connection.

Add a new VPN connection:

• Press the Home icon, press Menu, and tap Settings (figure 1)
• Tap Wireless & networks

• Tap VPN settings (figure 2)

• Tap Add VPN (figure 3)

• Select the type of VPN to add (PPTP, L2TP, L2TP/IPSec PSK VPN, L2TP/IPsec CRT VPN) (figure 4)

• Fill in VPN details such as VPN name, VPN server, etc (the required settings will depend on type of VPN selected) (figure 5)

Connecting to the VPN:

• Press the Home icon, press Menu, and tap Settings (figure 1 above)
• Tap Wireless & networks
• Tap VPN settings (figure 2 above)
• The VPN connections you have added are now listed
• Tap the VPN you wish to connect to
• A dialog box will open asking for your credentials, enter them and touch connect

When connected to a VPN, you will see an ongoing notification in the Status bar on your HTC Hero. If you should get disconnected, you will receive a notification and an option to go back to the VPN settings (figure 2) section.

Disconnecting from the VPN:

Simply open the notifications panel at the top of the screen on your HTC Hero and click on the VPN notification, then tap disconnect.

If you're using your HTC Hero for the first time, you can easily select the Wi-Fi network you'd like to join using the setup manager.

When you opt in for either Mobile Network or Wi-Fi, or just Wi-Fi, the Hero will by default try to connect to a Wi-Fi network near you.

Select the network you wish to connect to, enter the password if required and you're set up.

If you want to change the settings, or set it up for the first time, you can do this through the Settings menu.

Note: If you're attempting to access a network-based page or app, you may be required to set up a new Wi-Fi connection. When prompted, select the option to set up a new connection.

1. Access the Wi-Fi settings menu by navigating to the Wireless & networks menu
2. Select Wi-Fi settings
3. Choose a listed network, or add a hidden network by selecting Add Wi-Fi network
4. If you choose one of the listed networks and it's secured, enter the password, press Connect and you'll be connected to that network
5. If you wish to access a hidden network, select Add Wi-Fi network and enter the SSID
6. If a password is required, you'll be prompted to enter this before connecting

If Wi-Fi is turned off, you can now turn this on by ticking the box in the Wireless & networks menu.

The HTC Hero has a great screen that just begs for some quality video to show off. But what is the best way for you to convert your favorite videos and transfer them to your Hero?

In this guide, we show you what software you need to convert videos for viewing on the Hero, and we also show you how to get your newly converted videos onto your handset.

Requirements:

1. Installed copy of Handbrake software
2. Video files and or DVD of your choice
3. HTC Hero with microUSB cable

Step I: Launch the Handbrake application on your computer and select the video source

1. Launch Handbrake (figure 1)
2. In the menu on the right-hand side, select the iPod Legacy preset (figure 1)
3. Select your video source by clicking on the Source dropdown menu (we used a DVD for our testing purposes)
4. Select the destination and name for the file once it has been converted (both the .mp4 and .m4v extension work for the Hero)
5. Confirm that the container is set to MP4 File and that Large file size, Web optimized, and iPod 5G support are unchecked

Step II: Adjust Handbrake's Video Settings

Picture Tab:

1. Uncheck Keep Aspect Ratio
2. Set the Hero Width and Height (the Hero supports a maximum of 480 x 320 pixels)

Video Tab:

1. Set Handbrake's encoding settings by clicking on the Video tab (figure 2)
2. Confirm the Video Codec is set as H.264 (x264)
3. Framerate (FPS) should be set to Same as source
4. Under Quality, select the Avg Bitrate (kbps) and change it to 1500

Step III: Adjust audio settings

1. Set Handbrake's audio settings by clicking on the Audio tab (figure 3)
2. Confirm the Audio Codec is AAC (faac)
3. Mixdown should be set to Stereo
4. Change the Samplerate to 48
5. Change the Bitrate to 160

Step IV: Save as a preset for future use

1. Click on the Presets menu and select New Preset
2. Enter Hero in the dialog box and click Add
3. "Hero" will now be saved as a preset and listed on the right hand side in Handbrake to be used in the future

Step V: Convert the video and copy to your Hero

1. Click on the Start button in Handbrake
2. A command line/DOS window will open and start to process the video conversion
3. Once the conversion is done, mount your Hero on to your computer via USB
4. Once mounted, create a folder named Video in the root folder on the Hero
5. Copy converted file into the Video folder

That's it! The converted video can now be played on your Hero using the Gallery app. It should look fantastic on the Hero's screen as long as the original source was of good quality.

A few things to keep in mind when converting video:

1. The Hero does not like video file sizes over 2GB (the settings in Step II should help insure that the file size is kept under 2GB)
2. Your converted video will only be as good as the source video
3. If your source is over 480 x 320, you must be sure to set the width and height to a maximum of 480 x 320 as noted in Step II

Have you ever accidentally removed an application from your phone? There are many ways it can happen and it's always a mini-panic-attack-inducing moment when you realize you've lost something -- especially if it's an app you've paid for.

However, if you do find yourself in this predicament, please try to avoid a shock-inspired repurchase. Instead, follow these quick and easy steps to re-download your lost applications for free.

1. Navigate to the Android Market application and launch the Market

2. Press the Menu button and select Downloads

3. Scroll through your list of downloaded applications until you find the one that you are looking for (any paid applications should show "Purchased" next to them)

4. Once you've found your lost application, just re-download it as you did the first time

That's it! This also works for free applications as well, of course. Your download history is saved in the market to provide easy access to all your applications if needed.

Another handy use for this is freeing up device memory. If there's an application that you use occasionally, but you don't want it taking up your device's on-board memory when you aren't using it, simply remove it and re-download when you need it through this process.

Naturally you have seen the awesome HTC myTouch 3G screenshots we have taken for our user guides and you are wondering, "How did they do that?"

The HTC myTouch 3G runs on Android 2.1 and as of now, no applications are available that allow for on-device screenshots. This guide will provide you with the software you need and show you how to get stunning screen captures from your device.

Two separate pieces of software are required and must be installed on your PC:

1. The Android software development kit (SDK)
2. The Java SE software development kit (SDK)

Once your downloads are complete a few steps are required to get things ready.

On your computer:

1. Extract the Google Android SDK to a folder on your desktop
2. Install the the Java SE SDK

On the HTC myTouch 3G:

1. Press the Home icon, press Menu and then tap Settings
2. Tap on Applications
3. Tap on Development
4. Check the box for USB debugging

Now you are ready to get started.

1. Plug your HTC myTouch 3G into your computer via USB and Windows will attempt to install all of the appropriate drivers; one of the drivers will not be found and thus you must proceed to Device Manager in your Control Panel and find the HTC myTouch 3G (there will be a yellow icon next to it)
2. Right-click on the HTC myTouch 3G entry and select properties; instruct Windows to update/install the driver for this device and when asked, simply browse to the usb_driver folder inside of the Android software development kit folder that you extracted to your desktop earlier -- the device is recognized and the driver is installed
3. Browse to the Android SDK folder that you extracted to your desktop and run the SDK Setup.exe to start the program
4. Once the application has launched you will be presented with a window as shown in figure 2 above
5. Click on the Refresh button so that the application can update its list of operating system SDKs available from Google
6. Check off the section next to the URL that is shown in the application; you are now presented with a list of Android SDKs and Google APIs you wish to install
7. It is recommended that you select select all available packages for maximum compatibility
8. Once the files have been downloaded simply close the application
9. Browse to the Tools folder inside the Android SDK folder you extracted to your desktop
10. Double click on DDMS.BAT to execute the Dalvik Debug Monitor
11. The application will launch with a DOS command window and eventually a Windows based application -- your phone will be listed on the left hand side, and you should click on it to make sure it is selected
12. Click on the Device menu and select Screen Capture or use the CTRL-S key combo
13. The capture now appears on your screen, but there is one final undocumented step
14. We recommend that you click on the Copy button and paste the screenshot into your image editor of choice (Microsoft Paint, Adobe Photoshop, etc) -- the reason for this is that there is a known bug that does not carry over the colors of the actual screenshot inside the capture utility

Voila! You now have a stunning screenshot from the display on your HTC myTouch 3G. Repeat steps 12-14 to generate more screenshots.

The HTC myTouch 3G with Android 2.1 includes support for Virtual Private Network (VPN) connectivity. Here we show you, step by step, how to setup a VPN connection.

Add a new VPN connection:

• Press the Home icon, press Menu, and tap Settings
• Tap Wireless & networks
• Tap VPN settings
• Tap Add VPN
• Select the type of VPN to add (PPTP, L2TP, L2TP/IPSec PSK VPN, L2TP/IPsec CRT VPN)
• Fill in VPN details such as VPN name, VPN server, etc (the required settings will depend on type of VPN selected)

Connecting to the VPN:

• Press the Home icon, press Menu, and tap Settings
• Tap Wireless & networks
• Tap VPN settings
• The VPN connections you have added are now listed
• Tap the VPN you wish to connect to
• A dialog box will open asking for your credentials, enter them and touch connect

Online videos are great. You can view them from just about anywhere, and much of the time, they're absolutely free.

But at times, especially while on the go, connectivity can be a barrier between you and the video you want to see.

When coverage-related issues arise, it's just handier to have the videos you want to watch stored right there on your memory card. If you have an HTC myTouch 3G, achieving this couldn't be easier with YouTube videos.

In this guide, we show you how to locate the video you want and download it directly to you handset.

1. Navigate your phone's browser to the YouTube video you want to download

2. Click on the video's URL and use the Android Web browser to open it rather than the YouTube application

3. While in the browser, hit Menu and then Go To URL

Here's where the magic happens.

4. The video's URL should be in the URL field. Place your cursor directly after the "www." and type in the word "pwn" before "youtube.com"

The resulting link should look something like "http://www.pwnyoutube.com/videocode"

5. Hit Enter

6. Simply tapping the Download High Quality MP4 Video option on this page will download the MP4 file directly to your SD card

Now you have the video you wanted stored on your device for viewing whenever you want, whether or not you have wireless coverage.

Google Voice provides a wide variety of functions to users, but many people aren't looking to take advantage of all the features Google Voice affords.

Even if simultaneous ringing and free SMS don't appeal to you, Google Voice can still be used as a great replacement for your carrier's standard voicemail system. What's more, Google Voice offers a free voicemail transcription service that uses voice-to-text to transcribe messages. Voicemail transcriptions can then be delivered to you via email or SMS.

In this guide, we show you how to set up Google Voice voicemail on your HTC myTouch 3G and configure the attached voicemail transcription service.

Activate Google Voice voicemail on your HTC myTouch 3G

1. Log in to the Google Voice website and click Settings in the top right corner
2. Locate the phone you wish to activate voicemail for and click Activate Google voicemail on this phone
3. On your HTC myTouch 3G, dial *004*xxx-xxx-xxxx# (where xxx-xxx-xxxx is your Google Voice phone number) and press Call
4. A forwarding confirmation will be displayed on your screen
5. On the Google Voice website, click Done

Configure voicemail transcriptions and delivery

1. Log in to the Google Voice website and click Settings in the top right corner
2. Click on the Voicemail & SMS tab
3. Next to "Voicemail Notifications", check the box next to Email the message to and select an email address to receive your voicemail transcriptions via email
4. Beneath "Send a text (SMS) message to", check the box next to each cell phone on which you want to receive SMS voicemail transcriptions
5. Next to Voicemail Transcripts, check the box next to Transcribe Voicemails
6. Click the Save Changes button at the bottom of the screen

That's it! Google Voice will now replace your T-Mobile voicemail, and it will deliver transcriptions of each message via email or SMS.

If at any point you wish to deactivate Google Voice voicemail, simply dial or ##004# on your HTC myTouch 3G and press Call. This will deactivate all call forwarding and the HTC myTouch 3G will use the standard voicemail system once again.

There's always that handful of people that, if given the option, we would rather not talk to on most occasions.

Sure you can typically "ignore" their calls and kick them to voicemail, but many folks are able to tell when a call has been screened manually. As a result, you're inevitably going to end up with some hurt feelings on the other end of the line.

But what if you could determine whose calls ring through and whose don't? If someone's call always goes straight to voicemail, he or she will likely think your phone is off or outside the service area.

The Android operating system has a nifty feature built-in, albeit somewhat hidden, that allows you just such freedoms.

In this guide, we'll show you how to gain a little more control over your incoming calls on a contact-by-contact basis.

1. From your home screen, tap the applications launcher
2. Scroll until you see the People application and tap it
3. Scroll until you find the contact that you'd like to send straight to voicemail, and tap to open the contact
4. Near the bottom of the contact page, find and tap on the Send to voicemail option
   1. A pop-up will appear asking if you're sure you want to enable this feature.
5. Tap OK

And you're done! You can do this to as many contacts as you choose and now, only the people you want to be able to reach you directly will have that power.

Bonus tip: Do you have a pesky telemarketer who doesn't get the hint? Save the number in your phone strictly for these purposes and cut stress in half!

There are two different ways to achieve a wallpaper change. We'll show you both of them in this guide.

From the home screen:

You can actually access your wallpaper image right from the home screen. This is the quickest and easiest way to do it.

1. Touch and hold the screen somewhere where there are no widgets or app icons
2. An Add to Home screen pop-up will appear - tap the Wallpapers option
3. You will then be presented with a Select wallpaper from window - choose Live wallpapers, Media gallery, Wallpaper gallery or Wallpapers
4. For Live wallpapers:
   1. Scroll to a live wallpaper that you want to use, and tap it
   2. If you're satisfied with your selection, tap Set wallpaper
5. For Media gallery:
   1. Your picture folders will be displayed on the screen - select the folder containing the picture you want to use for your wallpaper
   2. Tap on the image you want to set as your wallpaper
   3. You will be presented with your chosen picture on the screen with a colored cropping square on it
   4. Touch and drag any of the four sides of the square to resize the area of the image to be used for your wallpaper
   5. Once you're satisfied, tap Save
6. For Wallpaper Gallery or Wallpapers:
   1. Scroll through the images until you find the image that you want to use
   2. Once you select an image, tap Set wallpaper

From the settings menu:

1. Tap the applications launcher from the home screen
2. Tap the Settings icons
3. Tap Personalize
4. Tap the Home wallpaper option
5. Continue from Step 2 of the From the homescreen option

It's that easy! You now have a fresh new wallpaper configured on your HTC DROID Incredible.
