Getting a free education has never been easy, but Apple's new iTunes U app has made some excellent courses available totally free of charge. So if you're looking to broaden your horizons and learn a new skill, or even if you want to augment your full-time college course with a little extra study, iTunes U could be your go-to iOS app.

So get involved and start making use of the huge amount of free education material on offer, which includes content from over 150 schools, including such illustrious institutions as MIT, the University of California at Berkeley and Yale.

To get started follow these simple steps:

  • Open up the App Store on your iPhone/iPad or iPod and search for iTunes U
  • Wait for the app to install then start it from your home screen
  • Hit the 'Catalog' tab in the top right hand corner of your screen to browse for a course that piques your interest, or simply search for what you're looking for
  • Once you've found the course that's right for you choose 'Subscribe' and your device will begin downloading the first part of your chosen material
  • Your iPhone/iPad or iPod will then download each subsequent part and you can manage your subscriptions in iTunes too!
  • Sit down and begin absorbing the knowledge!
