For all of dazzling features that the Android G1 offers, its photographic capabilities are pretty tame. Packing a 3.2 megapixel camera might have been acceptable a few years back but these days it’s the norm to see a new mobile flaunting 8 megapixels or more, so in this regard the much-hyped original Google phone is pretty outclassed.
However, G1 owners will understandably want to make the most out of what they’ve been given and in this respect Snap Photo Pro is a highly recommended download.
While the application is still held back by hardware and software constraints (there is little that the developer can do about the slow response between pressing the photo button and the phone actually carrying out the request) it does come pre-loaded with a fairly comprehensive range of options.
The most useful is the image stabilizer, which uses the phone’s built-in accelerometer to enable blur-free snaps. The phone senses if you’re moving and holds off actually taking the photo until your hand is steady.
This obviously means that there’s sometimes an even longer delay than normal between you pressing the button and the image actually being captured, but if you want to get a decent shot then it’s a must.
Elsewhere you can tinker with such options as image quality, white balance, a self-timer and a low-light night mode. You also overlay a grid on the screen to assist in aligning your image perfectly.
Once the photo is taken then you’re presented with even more functionality; you can adjust the brightness, fiddle with the contrast and even add quirky effects. Of course, many will find it easier to perform such post-production work on their photos using a personal computer and the appropriate image editing package, but being able to do all this on the phone is quite unique.
Another neat touch we really liked was the way the application creates separate folders so images are categorized by the day they were taken on. If you’re a prolific snapper then this is a godsend and makes locating a certain shot a heck of a lot easier than it would normally be.
Although Snap Photo Pro is definitely held back a little by the limitations of the Android’s camera it does an excellent job of empowering the prospective G1-owning David Baileys amongst us.
Continual updates are promised by the developer but aside from working on the somewhat questionable stability of the application it’s hard to see what further improvements can be made; Snap Photo Pro already equals most dedicate ‘point and shoot’ digital cameras in terms of functionality.
